I Do!

Do you get the best results from your marketing?

January’s blog was called Marry Me and it was about committing to simple marketing messages. February’s was Cold Feet – about building the confidence to broadcast those messages.

The title of this month’s post is I Do, because once you’ve committed to simple marketing and you’ve found your confidence, there’s only one question left: What results are you actually trying to achieve?

I work with business owners and CEOs who want their businesses to work. Not just exist; not just keep them busy for a couple of days a week. They want to create proper results – the kind that pay the bills, fund a life you enjoy and make all the effort worthwhile.

If this sounds like you, read on!

I Do!

Over the last 25+ years of running my business, I’ve noticed something interesting. When people don’t have clear goals, their businesses start to drift. Not dramatically and not in a big, obvious way. It’s more subtle than that. They keep busy. They do bits of marketing here and there – they go to networking events; they send out a newsletter; they post on social media. But there’s no real direction.

I’ve done exactly that in the past. It’s a bit like wandering around a city without a map. You’re definitely moving … but you’ve got no idea if you’re getting any closer to where you want to be.

Marketing becomes particularly messy when this happens.

If you don’t know what result you want, how can you possibly choose the right marketing activity? So you try everything – a bit of LinkedIn; a new networking group; some Google ads; maybe another newsletter; perhaps even a brand new website.

Before long you’ve spent a lot of money, a lot of time and achieved … not very much. Not because marketing doesn’t work, but because you had no clear destination in the first place.

When I work with clients, something we talk about right at the start is results. Not vague hopes like “more visibility” or “getting my name out there.” Those aren’t results. They’re just pleasant sounding phrases.

A ‘result’ is something specific – more of the right clients; more income; more stability; more control over your time.

Once we know what result you want, everything becomes easier. Marketing becomes simpler. Decisions become clearer. Suddenly your business stops wandering around aimlessly and starts doing what you set it up to do.

That’s when your ideal clients start finding you; that’s when your marketing becomes simpler and much more cost effective. Read on for a short exercise to get you moving in the right direction.

The Marketing Moment

Here’s a quick exercise for you. Take a piece of paper or a blank screen and finish this sentence:

“This time next year, my business will …”

Not “I hope it might …” or “It would be nice if …”

Be bold. Be specific.

“My business will be working with 15 brilliant clients who each pay me £10,000 per year.”
“My business will double its turnover while I’m only working three days a week.”

Now ask yourself one more question:

What must happen in the next 12 months for you to feel that your business is truly working?

Leave a comment here and tell me your answers. Be bold. Be specific! Because businesses that know where they’re going get there a lot faster. And that’s when the real results start to happen.
