What?s Your Mojo? Why do You do What You do?

When someone asks about your business, do you tell them what you do and how you do it? Does that create the right picture, leaving people wanting to know and wanting to work with you? If I tell people that we help clients do their marketing and that we do it through a range of marketing tools, it?s not terribly inspiring. It doesn?t result in a queue of people wanting to know more.

A much better way of telling people what you do and creating a great impression is to tell them why you do what you. This is a great technique I learnt from Andrew Thorp at MojoLife. Instead of talking about what and how, talk about why ? the core of your business. When you do, you?ll find your mojo and be able to talk with real passion about your business.

How do you work out the ?why?? Here?s how:

  1. Think about the injustice that you?re fighting against in your business
  2. Decide what you?re striving to replace it with
  3. Think about why you feel connected with this cause.

When I did this exercise at a meeting of my MD2MD peer group, here?s what I came up with.

The injustice I?m fighting against is that one man band businesses think they can?t afford marketing support and that they have to take on work they don?t really what to do, to just get by. They believe that going through feast and famine is the norm and just something to be endured. They expect to have too much work and no time to sleep one week, followed by no work and no money for the rent the next week. I see so many small businesses struggle to make ends meet because of this.

And I know that it doesn?t have to be this way! I?m striving to replace failing small businesses and feast and famine with access to simple marketing tactics that get them off the feast and famine rollercoaster, giving them back their lives, while giving them a livelihood. I?m striving to replace the belief that good marketing is too expensive, with affordable help that gets small businesses to the next level.

Finally, what?s my connection with this cause? I?ve been there and done it! In the early days of my business, to earn a living, I took on all sorts of strange work that didn?t pay well and that I didn?t enjoy. I rode the feast and famine rollercoaster, never knowing where the next job or pay cheque would come from. I did whatever work came along, in case nothing else turned up. However, once I learnt the best ways to promote my business, without spending a fortune, I discovered that I could choose the work I did, taking on only the clients that I really wanted to work with. With some marketing planning, to help me keeping doing regular marketing, even when I was busy, I found that the work kept coming in. I know how much work I?ve got coming in and when I?ll next get paid.

Now doesn?t that sound more compelling that just saying ?I help people promote their businesses through a range of marketing services??

Try it with your business and see if you can create a much more inspiring story for your business. Share your mojo and see the difference it makes!
