Marry Me?

Most marketing messages are far too long. Pages of content instead of a paragraph. Paragraphs instead of a sentence. Too often we spend hours, days or even weeks trying to craft the perfect pitch. We think we must tell prospects about everything we do. But that doesn’t grab their attention. It actually turns them away, because we’ve confused them.
Simple marketing is an art form. For many people, writing short, concise messages is harder than writing longer ones. Simple marketing is something I love doing. Let me share a few ideas with you, to make it easier and more simples for you to get your message across.
Marry Me?
Just before Christmas last year, my Godson Ben proposed to his partner Katy. He did it in a very romantic way, with a very simple message.
Ben spelled out “Marry me” with straw bales, in a field on his farm!
The message had to be simple. “Please will you marry me, Katy?” would need a lot more bales to be carried out into the field and positioned. Katy would have needed to climb a tree to read the whole message. Instead, Ben kept the question simple. 22 bales instead of 200.
Look around at the marketing and advertising that you see. What catches your eye? Is it the short, snappy strap lines, that give you an idea of what’s being sold?
- Just do it
- Ah, Bisto!
- Have a break, have a KitKat
Some of them even have the product name in the strapline. Are you more likely to hunt that out, instead of product that expects you to read half a page of prose? The advert or webpage might be beautifully written, but if its not simple, it won’t get the message across quickly.
By the way – Katy said yes! The wedding is this summer and I’m a very proud Godmother.
The Marketing Moment
Now it’s your turn.
Can you describe what you do in just one sentence?
How about 10 words?
What about 2 words, or even 1?
When I’m only given one word, I choose “Marketing”. Not everyone knows what it means and many people are scared by that word. But for the single word choice, it works. Two words? “Simple marketing!”
What about you? Do share your 10, 2 and 1 words with me. Pop your suggestions in the comments. The best will be featured in next month’s Scribbles (free publicity for you!!)
