How Important is SEO?

What is SEO?

I’ve mentioned SEO a lot in my blogs and thought I would write a blog about why it is so important. SEO, Search Engine Optimization, is a online marketing strategy of improving a website’s visibility through a search engine like Google.

SEO for beginners

When you type a specific phrase into Google, you are presented with a list of millions of websites. These massive amounts of websites will be listed, usually 10 to a page. The websites listed on page 1 have been optimised for that phrase for which you searched (as well as others) and that is why it has appeared on page 1. I read last week that 91% of people using Google do not look past page 1 when searching.

A very common mistake that you can make when running your own website is not optimizing it correctly and just making it look attractive. You can make your website look as pretty as you want, but search engines can’t see that.  Search engines read code and text. You need to make sure that you have words and phrases on your website, ones that people actually search, not just ones you think they search.

There a few methods you can use to find out what people are searching. I personally prefer the Google Keyword Tool it is a free and easy to use tool  that allows you to view what people are searching, and how many people are searching it.
