Facebook: The Biggest Waste of a Marketers Time

Facebook: The Biggest Waste of a Marketers Time

In my experience whenever the topic of social media is brought to the table, Facebook is usually the first platform mentioned. Either Facebook is one of the most popular social media platforms around or they have a brilliant marketing team. Personally I find that Facebook’s brand is so impressive that the brand is better known than the product. Another common example of this is when people refer to a ‘Vacuum cleaner’ as ‘Hoover’. So how can the powerful brand of Facebook benefit you and your business?

Two weeks ago I wrote about how Twitter helped The Wallingford Food Festival and today I would like to tell you how Facebook helped the Food Festival. Working alongside the other social media platforms, Facebook was used to increase the digital presence and get people to buy tickets in advance for the Festival. Did Facebook help?

In short, yes Facebook did help. We posted updates every day for the 3 month build up to the event. Posting delicious photos of food, images from the previous event, links to the website and anything that would engage the Facebook audience. A week prior to the event the Facebook page attracted a mass audience of potential visitors asking questions about the event. They asked what time the event starts, could they bring their dogs etc. This was very refreshing as it showed that Facebook was working and it was fulfilling its purpose. Facebook helped create a digital presence, build hype for the festival and get people visiting the website to buy tickets ? it even brought a possible sponsor for the festival.

In my personal opinion, Facebook has something that I personally feel all the other platforms are lacking. It has personality. I would even say that it’s a lot more relaxed – compared to other platforms such as LinkedIn or Twitter. You can post humorous updates, tag people in photos (such as your business team) and use a much more relaxed method of communication. Of course you still upload content that is relevant to your business, but it’s far less robotic. From a business point of view this is ideal for building relationships, and building relationships is essential for new customers and clients.
